Separate 'know it' content from 'do it' content
Definitions, trends across the periodic table and named reactions are recall problems—you either remember the correct answer or you do not, and a flashcard tests that directly. Titration calculations, equilibrium problems and organic synthesis routes are procedural—the useful test is whether you can execute the method, not just state it.
Build separate card types for each. A definition card asks a direct question. A calculation card gives you a scenario and asks you to solve it, with the 'answer' being your own worked solution checked against a marking guide.

- Trends and periodicity → comparison cards
- Named reactions and mechanisms → sequencing cards
- Calculations → worked-problem cards you solve by hand each time
Treat equations as things to derive, not just recite
It is tempting to make a card that just asks for an equation and call it done. That tests recognition of a formula, not whether you can apply it correctly under exam conditions with the right units and significant figures.
Where possible, attach a worked example to the equation card so the retrieval includes actually using it—plugging in values, tracking units and arriving at a correctly rounded answer.
Keep module content alive after the module ends
Chemistry classes typically move on once a module test is finished, but the HSC exam does not respect that boundary—earlier modules can appear alongside the most recent one in the same paper. Keep a rolling review of earlier modules in your schedule rather than only revisiting the module you are currently taught.
This is exactly the problem spaced repetition solves: instead of manually remembering to circle back to an earlier module, a scheduler resurfaces it automatically once your recall of it is likely to have weakened.
Use past HSC and trial questions as your hardest cards
Once the basics are secure, convert real HSC-style questions into cards, especially ones that combine two modules or require you to justify an answer with a specific piece of data. These are harder to write but far closer to what the actual exam demands than a one-line definition card.
Score them honestly. A partial or vague answer should be marked as a miss so it comes back sooner, not rated as easy because you got the general idea.
