Where paper genuinely wins

Physical cards have no screen, no notifications and no setup beyond a pen and a stack of index cards. For students who find screens distracting or who study somewhere without reliable device access, that simplicity is a real advantage, not a nostalgia argument.

Writing a card by hand also forces a first pass of active engagement with the material, which is a genuine part of why some students swear by them.

Where paper struggles

The core weakness is scheduling. A shoebox of index cards has no memory of which cards you got right two weeks ago, so most physical systems fall back to a rough sorting method—a Leitner box with a few fixed piles—that is far less precise than an algorithm reacting to your actual recall history.

Paper also makes it hard to do anything beyond a basic flip: reconstructing a sequence, typing a precise answer that gets checked, or practising a spoken explanation with feedback are all difficult to build with cardboard.

A reasonable middle ground

Some students genuinely study better writing a first pass of cards by hand before digitising the same material for adaptive review—the handwriting supports initial encoding, and the app handles the scheduling that paper cannot do well.

This is not necessary for everyone, but it is a legitimate hybrid if you already like the feel of writing cards and do not want to give that up entirely.

Which to choose

Choose paper if you specifically want a screen-free method and are comfortable with rougher, manual scheduling. Choose Cueable if you want FSRS-based adaptive timing, varied active-recall formats and a plan built around a real exam date, without losing the option to write cards by hand first if that helps you.
