Beyond the word pair
A card that shows a foreign word and asks for its translation tests recognition, which is a real but limited skill. Producing the word from a definition, understanding it spoken and using it correctly in a sentence are separate skills that a purely translation-based deck does not build.
A stronger system varies the direction and format of practice: sometimes translating into the target language, sometimes out of it, sometimes typing the word from a spoken prompt or a definition alone.
- Recognition: see the word, recall the meaning
- Production: given the meaning, produce the word
- Listening: hear it, understand or transcribe it
- Usage: use it correctly in a constructed sentence
Why adaptive scheduling matters more here
Vocabulary decks for a language can run into the thousands of words, and words vary enormously in how quickly they are forgotten—a cognate close to your first language is far easier to retain than an unrelated, irregular term. Scheduling that reacts to your individual recall pattern per word, rather than a flat interval, matters more as the deck grows.
This is a case where a fixed review schedule wastes noticeably more time than an adaptive one, since the gap between your easiest and hardest words is often large.
